<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I woke up in a panic. I’ve had
nightmares before but this one was different. You see no one was
chasing me, I wasn’t falling from a high place and I wasn’t
behind the wheel seeing headlights. I had just knocked off a bluegill
at the bottom of the hole that I suspected was an honest two pounds.
In a world where most anglers rarely find a one pound bluegill, this
was a nightmare of epic proportions. Waking up safe and sound on top
of the covers and coming to the realization that I had never hooked
this fish was a huge relief. Fish of this caliber, while extremely
rare, do exist beyond my unusual dreams. Legendary bluegill hunter,
Bruce Condello, and his group of bluegill aficionado friends, had
shirts made of dogs riding bicycles because honest three pound
bluegills are about as common. Bruce specifically has five bluegills
to his credit that went an honest three pounds in his home state of
Nebraska. If we were to start a fantasy bluegill fishing league,
another of my top draft picks would have to be Clayton Davis of North
Dakota. Davis recently captured a 12” two pound specimen late ice
this past winter and has many other large fish to his credit. While
scarfing down a gas station burrito on the way home from chasing
bluegills all day may have led me to strange dreams of massive pie
plates, I wanted more. I wanted to know what it really takes to land
a personal best this ice season. How do these anglers select lakes
that have the capabilities to produce this caliber of bluegill? Does
it relate to the genetics of the fish or is it simply a matter of
finding over fed obese populations? What voodoo mind tricks are
involved in finding dogs riding bicycles?</div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
North Dakota angler, Clayton Davis,
has really made a name for himself the past few seasons with his
social media bluegill pictures. Living in an area where walleyes and
perch reign as king, he has found populations of giant untapped
bluegills. Davis has a system of finding lakes that have trophy
potential and it starts with looking into state stocking reports. He
explained to me that you not only need to check available data on
bluegill populations but also try to locate lakes with large pike.
Lakes that boast populations of large pike typically have a balanced
population of bluegills. Balanced populations have the potential to
grow large fish versus lakes that have over abundant populations of
fish that will end up stunted. Lakes will only support so many inches
of fish so these large predators are needed to keep the population in
check and the size good.
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
After selecting lakes with high caliber
potential, Davis begins his search. He notes that pencil reeds are
paramount when searching out a new lake and big bluegills are usually
in close proximity. He will start shallow and work his way through
the mid depth weed flats out into the basin. During late ice, which
he considers the best time to chase pie plates, he often finds giants
in as shallow as three feet of water. Using the weed fishing mode on
his Vexilar FLX-28 allows Davis to see his jig and approaching fish
in this heavy cover. He explains that the weed mode drowns out
clutter from the weeds and has been instrumental in his success. When
he begins to find medium sized fish, he will often drill a large
concentration of holes to circle that immediate area. This allows him
to dissect the weed beds and find the best vantage points. Places for
fish to ambush prey, while also providing cover from large pike, are
going to hold the largest gills. He described that a sort of pecking
order exists in the world of bluegills and big fish will take these
prime locations and push smaller fish out into the fringe areas.
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The founding father of modern ice
fishing, Mr. Dave Genz, has been chasing high caliber bluegills since
childhood. He likes to look for big bluegills in lakes that will
sometimes experience a partial winter kill. Yes, you read that
correct. This is a theory that has worked well for Genz over the
years. It goes back to a lake only being able to support so many
inches of fish. A partial winter kill will thin the lake enough for
the remaining fish to thrive and grow large. In order for this to
happen at least part of the lake has to be shallow limiting oxygen
after the weeds die off mid-winter. This is one of the few events
that can reverse the effects of lakes that house over abundant
stunted populations.
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Pursuing pie plate sized bluegills is
my passion. I have spent countless hours milling over maps and lake
data looking for the next lake that may produce a fish over 11”. I
have found a few factors that I like to look for when trying new
waters. The first would be current. Lakes that are connected by
rivers and have some current running through them for whatever reason
are always top producers. While I have not completely figured out the
correlation, give this trick a try and I promise you won’t be
disappointed. The second thing I like to look for is the presence of
shrimp. Amphipods or shrimp are high calorie meals for bluegills and
can bulk up fish faster than other invertebrates. If obese gills are
on the docket this winter, find the lakes with shrimp and current.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The other piece of the puzzle is
genetics. Male bluegills pass on genetics to their offspring. Just as
my children will never be as tall as Shaqueille O’Neil’s
children, 7” male gills do not have the proper genetics to produce
11” bulls. Bruce Condello, owner of the website bigbluegill.com,
has his own strain of bluegill called Condello gills. He has created
this strain on a private pond that he manages by netting the pond
every year in October. By taking out all bluegills except the largest
1/10 of 1 %, he has created a sort of super strain that can grow to
10” in sixteen months. One thing this tells us is that when anglers
sort to keep the largest bluegills as table fare, we are genetically
making our bluegill populations smaller. It is important that the
bluegill aficionado recognizes this and opts to release big bulls and
instead harvest more abundant smaller fish.
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="_GoBack"></a>When hunting down
giant Nebraska bluegills on public water, Bruce likes to look for
lakes that house large concentrations of juvenile largemouth bass. It
goes back to the theory of lakes only being able to support so many
inches of fish. According to Condello, largemouth bass in the 11”
range are eating machines and keep populations balanced. This allows
remaining bluegills enough food to pack on pounds. He also looks for
lakes that have, what he describes as, high water quality. Lakes that
have submergent vegetation, clear water and low nutrient loads are
his top choices. Clear lakes have better sunlight penetration for
weed growth. These lakes with rooted vegetation produce oxygen from
the bottom up so fish don’t get stressed and can continue to feed
even throughout difficult periods of the year. Lakes that are highly
nutrient laden lack the sunlight penetration to grow deep rooted
vegetation so oxygen comes from algae and can dip to low levels. He
also noted the importance of appropriate sized invertebrates for the
fish to feed on in the early stages. If another species strips out
the 1 mm sized invertebrates, young bluegills must become risk
takers, leaving the protection of the weeds in search of an open
water food source. This often leads to them being eaten by bass. He
believes that having enough of the correct sized invertebrates is
more important than the amount of available spawning habitat in a
particular lake. Avoiding lakes with small stunted populations is
paramount. Lakes with an overabundance of weeds will foster small
fish and stunted populations. Ideal waters are comprised of less than
10% weeds. Heavily weeded lakes will protect more bluegills from
predation than the food source can support and the population will
stunt. Condello’s best advice for an angler looking to ice a
personal best this winter is to first, find lakes that have big
bluegills and second, sort through a lot of fish. Visualize the items
that a large bluegill may eat that a medium sized bluegill cannot.
Big bluegills have bigger mouths than their medium sized counter
parts so bigger baits are often necessary. Pay attention to the depth
that the bigger fish are using. Don’t be afraid to leave medium
sized fish to search out giants.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The ice season is finally upon us and
with it brings an opportunity to spend time with friends and family
on the hard water again. Whether you or I ice a personal best or not
this season, the charm is what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual
series of occasions for hope (John Buchan). I guess I just love
chasing dogs riding bicycles.

Fall is a time of plenty for the
outdoor enthusiast. While many pass the days in tree stands waiting for a wily
buck to slip up, others wait in fields for fall migrants to pass overhead.
Serious walleye anglers are experiencing their best big fish bite of the year
over sharp breaks and deep water. Days are devoted to spending quality time
with family over a warm bowl of chili while cheering on a favorite team.
Families make pilgrimages north to view fall colors or hunt grouse. The fall
wish list can get pretty long but for serious panfish aficionados, the fall
signals a time of large concentrations of hungry panfish in predictable
patterns. Fall brings an opportunity to target some of the largest specimens in
a particular body of water. You’ll find that locating and catching bluegills in
the fall is not much different than at first ice.</div>

As late summer rolls around and
water temperatures get high, big bluegills often evacuate shallow water leaving
behind their smaller counterparts. These fish typically stay suspended on the
thermocline until fall turnover. Once the water turns over, some of these large
fish will return to the weeds while others stay suspended over deep water. Here
they generally stay together in small schools of 10-20 fish. These sight
feeders are always moving and grazing on anything that catches their eye. Bluegill’s
food sources include such things as algae, aquatic vegetation, zooplankton,
insect larvae, insects, fish eggs and occasionally minnows. In the fall,
packing on pounds for leaner times becomes a priority. Some studies show fish
eating up to 35% of their body weight weekly. As water temperatures begin to
drop, fish tend to stay more active during daytime hours, not limiting anglers
to first and last light.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">
I recently had the opportunity to
spend some time on one of my favorite big bluegill haunts, by none other than
legendary angler Dave Genz. When I picked him up at the dock, he was armed with
his trusted Vexilar FLX-28, a pocket full of euro larvae and an assortment of
his favorite ice jigs. As we made our way out into the basin, familiar lines
began to show up on our flashers, reminiscent of being on the ice. Dave knew
how to interpret these lines very well as it only took moments before he was
tussling with his first bluegill. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">
Genz suggested anchoring in both
the front and back of the boat to keep presentations vertical and visible on
electronics. Too much boat sway would bring jigs outside the view of our
electronics and leave us fishing blind. He showed me a new tungsten jig that
will be available later this fall, called the Dropper. The heavy tungsten
allowed him to use a small profile jig that stayed vertical and dropped quickly
to feeding fish.</div>

“Crappie Sniffer” Peterson, owner of HSM Outdoors, says fall is his favorite
time of year to hunt big bluegills. The lakes he fishes around Alexandria,
Minnesota, all have very different and distinct patterns. He relies heavily on
the use of his electronics while searching out basin areas in close proximity
to structure. Once fish are located, the trolling motor is deployed and used to
hover over suspended schools of gills. He likes the freedom to be able to move
and react quickly. He also advocates keeping log books that include information
like date, water temperature, clarity of water and depth which he considers
invaluable to patterning and locating fish on new bodies of water.</div>

HSM Pro Staffer, Mike Raetz, also
professes to catch his largest bluegills during fall, suspended over deep
water. Mike often uses his ice rods to jig vertically over the side of the
boat. He likes how shorter rods keep his jig inside the cone angle and visible
on his Vexilar. “One big split shot, about a foot above my jig, is all I need
to maintain depth control,” says Raetz. Mike employs a single anchor off the
front of the boat once fish are located. This keeps him swaying and working
different fish, picking off the most aggressive ones before moving to his next
location. </div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.5pt;">It’s finally my favorite time of year, early ice. My auger is
tuned up and ready. My new Clam shelter is assembled, and my Vexilar battery is
charged. My thoughts have started to drift to what skills I would like to hone
this season. The addicting part of ice fishing for me is putting together the
puzzle and unlocking the mysteries of the world below the frozen surface. That
equals finding fish where others seldom look. According to a recent survey on
my Facebook page, an overwhelming amount of anglers say the greatest skill an
ice angler can improve on is the art of finding fish. This was seen as a
greater skill than jigging style and bite detection. Then why do some anglers
congregate over community hot spots, so accepting that the fish are simply not
biting? These anglers have yet to be stricken with what we refer to, in my
group of friends, as the fish itch. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.5pt;">The fish itch is extremely contagious and usually comes on
shortly after having success off the beaten path. Far out of sight, anglers
with the fish itch, strike out confidently over fresh untapped ice. Symptoms
begin as a feeling of persistence that drives you to keep searching until you
have located fish. As symptoms eventually progress, you will begin to find
larger concentrations of willing biters. Rumor has it that some anglers, who
have had the itch for years, will eventually be able to pursue some of the
largest specimens in a given lake, known as slabs and bulls. You will begin to
recognize anglers with the itch this winter as they move quickly between holes,
Vexilar in hand. If you have been stricken, here are some ways that you can
scratch the fish itch this season.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.5pt;">Taking lessons from the past is a huge part of finding fish on
your own and gaining confidence away from the community hot spot. When going to
a new body of water, try to find areas that have the same characteristics as
the areas where you have caught fish in the past. Panfish tend to relate to
similar areas on most bodies of water. Learning to identify fish holding
characteristics and translating them to different bodies of water will lead to
future success. One of my favorite crappie spots is a 20’ depression in the
middle of a small shallow bay. When I study a lake map of a new body of water,
I always highlight areas that mimic my favorite spot back home. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>One tip can be to visualize a contour
map in 3D. Looking for fish holding areas on a piece of paper can be difficult.
When you begin to see maps in 3D, you will get a feel for how fish relate to a
particular spot. You will begin to understand how they find cover from
predators, and how they find food.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.5pt;">Drive through the community hot spot. It is always worth seeing
what type of areas the locals are fishing. Let’s say many of the permanent
houses are spread out over a 30’ hole, surrounded by a shallow weed flat.<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span> I will begin to search the lake
map for other areas with similar traits. Chances are if you can find a similar
spot with less fishing pressure, you may hit the jackpot. <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>It can be a huge advantage to work in
a team with one angler walking ahead drilling, while the other follows with the
Vexilar. Quickly driving up to each hole on the snowmobile and swinging the
transducer in different directions will let you know if fish are present. If
fish are seen when swinging the transducer, it will alert you to which direction
to drill next. Once located, we drill holes closer together until we are right
on top of the bio mass. Missing a school of fish by ten feet is like missing by
a mile. The new Pro View Transducer from Vexilar has been a real game changer
the past few seasons. It allows an angler to control the cone angle with the
gain knob. The ability to search a larger area with fewer holes is a huge
advantage and allows for more time scratching the itch.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.5pt;"> <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>Searching shallower than everyone else
will often produce the largest panfish in a given water system. Panfish grow
large because they are able to avoid predators, including anglers. Noise from
anglers can push large panfish out of deep water and into heavy cover. Once in
the weeds they will find the oxygen, food, and cover they need to thrive. The
two factors that seem to draw fish are green healthy weeds and proximity to
deep water. Coontail and curly leaf pondweed specifically will often stay
green, even through the harshest fall weather. Hungry panfish will roam through
the weed stocks, like a pack of lions, looking for that next easy meal. While
pre-fishing for a tournament last winter, my wife and I stumbled on an
interesting pattern. While most anglers drilled out deep basins looking for
plankton feeders, we found huge bluegills gorging on Amphipods or freshwater
shrimp on a large weed flat. Watching these fish with our underwater camera uncovered
larger bluegills than we had ever encountered on this lake. We watched in
fascination as these fish made their way through the weeds with ease, sucking
shrimp off the stocks. Shallow water is where fishing fast really shines.
Because fish aren’t as visible in shallow water on electronics, we briefly fish
each hole we drill. By drilling a large
amount of holes we are assured to find the open patches, pathways and edges,
which hold the largest numbers of fish.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.5pt;">Steep drop off’s surrounding main lake structure can also hold
large concentrations of fish. These areas hold food such as mayfly larva and
dragonfly larva. While these food sources can be present in many different
areas, the base of a steeply dropping slope will provide some of the highest
concentrations. For years, panfish guru Dave Genz has talked about these sticky
bottom areas. These areas house the correct type of substrate to allow larva to
burrow. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

The morning started off slow as we worked through a large coontail flat that had produced some nice fish for me on Friday. After striking out and what seemed like a million holes later, we made our way into the 9' depression in the middle of the bay. Small perch begin to light up our Vexilar's as they raced up to steal our euro larva. Must have been a large bug hatch going on from the amount of fish located over the mud basin. Every once and awhile a larger fish would come through high in the water column and these were bluegills. While we didn't capture any true backwoods monsters on this trip, our average fish was around 9" with the largest specimens going 9.75". The hot bait of the day was the Half Ant from Clam and seemed to produce fish with whatever we happened to tip it with. All fish were released to pass on those good genetics. I hope this snow coming doesn't goof things up for us. Tight Lines! <br />

It was a cool July morning on
Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula when we made our way onto the drift boat. Pure
adrenaline and excitement had taken over as the 30” Kenai River rainbows we had
been dreaming of became a distinct possibility. Thoughts of fly selection fill
my mind as we made our way out into the fog. I had spent the night before
carefully assembling a fluorocarbon leader and tipping it with the only prince
nymph I felt worthy of these legendary Kenai River rainbows. I cannot deny the
initial disappointment that came over me as Alaska Troutfitter’s Guide Eric
Perkins handed me a 6 weight yielding something that looked like it came off a
6th graders friendship bracelet. I am by no means a fly fishing
purist but had a hard time believing that some of the largest rainbows on earth
were going to fall victim to these gaudy pieces of plastic. I think he could
sense my disappointment as I grabbed the rod from him. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">
As we began our decent into the
canyon, I couldn’t help but look over at the other drift boats and wonder if
they too were using such unrefined offerings. Our guide carefully navigated
around a few boulders and instructed my wife, Kim, to “hit the shot” on the far
current seam. She rolled out a large cast and as soon as she mended her
indicator dipped below the surface. I caught a glimpse of silver as the large
fish rolled beneath the surface. I guess that bead fishing was starting to grow
on me, but it took several large rainbows of my own before I completely bought
in. Throughout the day, our guide would reach into a rubber made tool box and
pull out different colors of nail polish. He would change the shade of our
beads to match the stage of salmon eggs in the river. Alaskans are serious
about bead fishing and for good reason. The original owner of Alaska
Troutfitters, Curt Trout, was one of the first anglers to experiment with
plastic beads. He would train guides by having them paint beads that would
later be taken to the river and compared to the real thing. They would drop different
beads amongst salmon eggs until the apprentice and Curt could not tell the
difference. Curt Trout has now passed on; however, the shops new owners, Dusty
and Billy, have continued on with his legacy of being well versed in bead
fishing. The secret bead painting room is only accessible by two employees.
Their trademark way of painting beads to achieve that perfect molted swirl is
known throughout Alaska. While we didn’t end up hooking a 30” rainbow, several
fish over the 20” mark started a love affair with bead fishing that would
travel back to my home streams on the Great Lakes. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">
In the past few seasons, I have
really gained confidence in bead fishing. Last fall, during my annual
pilgrimage to the Pierre Marquette River, I couldn’t help but try them on king
salmon. We had absolutely amazing results. On previous trips we would start our
adventure several hours before daylight, casting minnow baits in complete
darkness. Once the sun came up we would fish through holes using cut skein. By
afternoon the bright skies would eventually cause the bite to die off. This
year we found bead fishing could extend this notorious morning bite late into
the day by simply downsizing from skein to beads. We were amazed to find how
light these kings would bite during the afternoon, often times just causing our
floats to pause or drift sideways for a moment. Even with bright bluebird skies
they could not pass up a single egg drifted past them.</div>

On Lake Superior’s Bois Brule River
local fly patters like the glimmer soft hackle, spring wiggler and Lake
Superior x-leg are considered the norm for steelhead. We found many willing
steelhead using… you guessed it, beads. Actually they worked so well on this
gin clear, spring fed, trout stream that they have become my confidence bait here
on my home water. Fall is a great time to use smaller beads in caramel roe or
apricot to mimic the many brown trout eggs washing downstream. Spring runoff
will muddy up the water and colors like chartreuse and tangerine really shine.
Runoff that contains a lot of red clay is common on Lake Superior streams.
Chartreuse and yellow beads will often look far more natural than any shade of
orange or red in these conditions.
Opaque colors of nail polish can give eggs the mottled look like they
have been in the river awhile. Small drops of pink, orange and even black nail
polish can further refine offerings, imitating a nucleus. I was a skeptic at
first but have since found that the possibilities are endless for imitating the
common egg. I now sometimes find myself on all fours inspecting eggs lying on
the bank or boat floor trying to match the hatch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjViIwkjFUCNLipFxW4GrLy5Ax6PAfFK9S-UqELXHr9WQ5ujRwPO1LsTy8MtoRJw5FFV3z2uPmRKvZXL8AwBsNHcZXUzKyH97e0SHvoEvy_5k-SmLYXutry3YzJtsArExmkYUFE7FFQgMIr/s1600/Spring+2013+062.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjViIwkjFUCNLipFxW4GrLy5Ax6PAfFK9S-UqELXHr9WQ5ujRwPO1LsTy8MtoRJw5FFV3z2uPmRKvZXL8AwBsNHcZXUzKyH97e0SHvoEvy_5k-SmLYXutry3YzJtsArExmkYUFE7FFQgMIr/s400/Spring+2013+062.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When trying to match the egg
hatch, I try to keep in mind the size of eggs fish are feeding on. If fish are
feeding on eggs from steelhead, sockeye, suckers or whitefish, I tend to start
with a 6mm. If fish are feeding on eggs from pinks or silvers, I start with an
8 mm. The largest I personally carry is a 10 mm and I use these when fish are
feeding on larger eggs from king or chum salmon. The other important factor is
color. Matching bead color to the color of eggs that fish are feeding on seems
like an easy task; however, several factors come into play. Keep in mind the
time of day and available light penetration, color of the water, amount of
sediment and if runoff is stained from tannic acid swamps or red clay banks.
All of these factors can make the bead look different underwater. The easiest
test is to inspect beads underwater before drifting. This allows you to make
adjustments and also check visibility. As a final test, I hold beads up to the
sun to look at how the light passes through them. I have found that translucent
beads catch more fish. The secret lies in making the bead translucent but not
so shiny that they spook finicky fish. The last but certainly not least
important factor to consider is the stage of the eggs the fish are keying in
on. Eggs change color constantly as they develop into the alevin stage. The
nucleus that is originally present changes over to two distinct black dots as
the embryo is formed. The embryo will then begin to form a darker red yoke sack
along the bottom portion. In the later stages, eggs look white as the embryo
can be seen through the egg. When an egg dies and is washed downstream, it
quickly takes on a yellowish hue. If it is plagued by fungus or algae, it will
become green. Rather than getting too caught up in the details carry a large
selection and change beads often until you find something that works. </div>

One of
the great things about beads is how customizable they are. While Alaska
Troutfitters’ Shop Manager, Laura, wouldn’t tell me any trade secrets she
highly recommended a three step process. Painting with opaque nail polish will
give beads the mottled look like they have been in the water. Another trick is
to spray white or yellow paint into a paper bag, let the paint dry slightly,
add beads and shake. This will achieve the same effect but is far less time
consuming. Leave beads on a newspaper to dry and you are ready to fish. I have
also been known to hand paint a nucleus, black dots to represent embryo eyes or
a small red yoke sack spot on the bottom of beads. My final step is always to
dip painted beads in Soft-Tex. This will give beads a softer more realistic
feel and protect nail polish from chipping.

Rigging beads is not a difficult
venture. Common practice is to peg beads a small distance above the hook. This
will assure that fish are not hooked deeply. It also serves to hide the hook in
clear conditions and prevents large beads from covering the hook gap. Beads can
be pegged using a toothpick, small clear commercially available pegs, or tied
onto the line using a bead knot. I have seen <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1926716890932876381" name="_GoBack"></a>angler’s
fish beads under floats, with strike indicators and along the bottom, all with
great success. Make them work with the style of fishing you are accustomed to. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The ice season has come to an end
but don’t throw out the larva or put away the ice fishing jigs quite yet. You
might find success using winter strategies for spring success. After ice out,
crappies will start to make their way from the deep water haunts of winter to
shallow black bottom bays. It’s not spawning time. These fish are searching for
the buffet line. Black bottom bays soak up the heat of the sun like a sponge
and hold bug hatches necessary to start the food chain. Crappies sneak in on
warm days for a quick meal long before the spawn begins. While minnows are a
great producer once water temperatures have warmed, ice out slabs require finesse
presentations. I think the experiment stemmed from my unpreparedness for the
coming season. Winter jig boxes and larva somehow made their way into the boat
one spring morning. Now I never leave them behind and don’t think you will want
to either.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje6zT5gpdgkVy7JpSM0lTiKnXrh85XoPUjuKCZP51dKTxnDtSuHsPIHELbc3xHEp5hyphenhyphenKejuc4jX3FzfJJVJXWR9R8KCq4RVVrrBllvYYu1Hd44ZabASvpZbypqvwgflq6GQIVPV9lXZvk2/s1600/5-3-12+my+camera+045.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje6zT5gpdgkVy7JpSM0lTiKnXrh85XoPUjuKCZP51dKTxnDtSuHsPIHELbc3xHEp5hyphenhyphenKejuc4jX3FzfJJVJXWR9R8KCq4RVVrrBllvYYu1Hd44ZabASvpZbypqvwgflq6GQIVPV9lXZvk2/s320/5-3-12+my+camera+045.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Predictable locations make searching
for crappies at ice out fairly basic. Bays located on the northern end of lakes
warm up first and see the first signs of life. Feeder creeks can also hold
insect life and draw in crappies for a quick bite. Soft bottom shorelines on
the northern end of lakes are also areas worth exploring. Look for anything
that will transfer heat into the water like tree branches, cattails or wood
dock pillars. We pay close attention to the temperature reading on the graph
when scoping out areas. It’s amazing what a difference a few degrees make to
crappies this time of year. On one outing last year after searching out several
bays we learned an important lesson in temperature. The first bay we fished was
void of fish. Normally, after striking out, we would start to search different
types of areas and abandon black bottom bays altogether. On this particular day,
we decided to check out a similar bay in the other basin of the lake. We headed
to some overhanging tree branches in the far back section and were greeted with
a water temperature 3 degrees higher than in the first bay. We found crappies
stacked up against tree limbs and when we didn’t get snagged, we hooked fish.
Just that small change in temperature made all the difference. Another
important lesson we learned was that while It’s easy to overlook the really
snag infested areas; these areas often hold some of the largest specimens.
Looking through old fishing log books, I also uncovered that many of my biggest
crappies have been caught right after ice out, long before the spawn. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Stealth is equally as important in
the spring as during late ice. We use the electric motor to slip into bays and
deploy the anchor quietly. Excess commotion will push shallow water slabs deeper
into unreachable cover. Cold fronts may also push fish deep into heavy cover or
into the deepest part of bays. Fronts will sometimes push fish out of bays
altogether but don’t fret because they seldom go far. The first break line
outside of the bay will offer crappies the security they need to wait out a

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Float fishing brings out the kid in
all of us. If your childhood was anything like mine, many hours were devoted to
watching a float and patiently waiting for it to slip beneath the water’s
surface. My level of excitement hasn’t changed much since those early days. I
still love the anticipation of float fishing. Ice out crappie fishing is a
great opportunity to release that inner child. The round bobbers of your
childhood may lead to light strikes going unnoticed but adult versions do exist.
I started using small clear floats that attach with surgical tubing. My
favorite is the 2.4 gram Drennan Crystal Loafer. These floats are used by
tournament anglers in the UK because of their incredible sensitivity. These
floats can be perfectly weighted to achieve neutral buoyance. The goal is to
have enough weight so only the orange top of the float is above water. If a
crappie as much as thinks about sampling your offering, these floats will alert
you. Crappies are still biting just as light as when you left them a few weeks
ago during late ice. Many anglers abandon small presentations at ice out and go
straight to large bobbers and minnows while anglers in the know stick with cold
water presentations.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Jigs for early season success
should be small. Some of my favorites are the 3 mm tungsten jigs from Fiskas.
They cast with ease and weight floats to that sensitive level of neutral
buoyancy. I also like the 2.5 mm Hole-In Jig from Fiskas. I tend to tip these
with micro plastics and use a slow retrieve to swim them back to the boat. Hole-In
Jigs, by design, stay perfectly horizontal without having to position knots.
The poor crappies don’t have a chance. Some other stealthy options include 1/64<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span>
oz calf tail jigs. Calf tail jigs take on a life of their own under water. They
can be tipped with a single wax worm and fished in a stationary manner or
worked back to the boat without bait. Experience has taught me that cold water
crappies prefer a smooth gliding motion over jerky up and down movements.
Experiment with float depth and speed of retrieve until you crack the code.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">It feels great to be back in the
boat, feeling the heat from the spring sun, but before you race to put away
your ice fishing gear give winter strategies a try. It’s a great technique to
tempt cold water slabs and make you a more versatile angler. </span></div>

<b><u>Tournament
Strategies to Improve Your Panfish Game<o:p></o:p></u></b></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
By: Garett Svir<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Competition drives anglers to fish
at the top of their game. Human beings are competitive by nature and when
anglers compete, great ideas are born. Tournament anglers learn how to manage
inefficiencies. They find fish that other anglers overlook. They learn how to
catch discerning fish, and not just accept that they are not biting. In a
winter panfish tournament, success is measured by ounces rather than pounds.
Missing a single bluegill could be the difference between cashing a check or
leaving empty handed. Even if you don’t want to approach your next ice outing
like its tournament day, the techniques that are developed in the heat of
battle can help all of us have more fun on the ice this winter. Here are some
tournament winning strategies that will make you more successful on the hard
water this winter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy76uwRRZg6qC2phqKhmR-WBgI3gsvrfgbKxhJ938R5RcFs2mV3h7Tn_vohM3z0E5BGjICR3uf8esU4bniSNP9oIy7XOQoW36IewndXzPtKV0kHqOvN8c3uNwSfs2DesGNMkxZuLl1-Lef/s1600/Tournament+Tips+%233.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy76uwRRZg6qC2phqKhmR-WBgI3gsvrfgbKxhJ938R5RcFs2mV3h7Tn_vohM3z0E5BGjICR3uf8esU4bniSNP9oIy7XOQoW36IewndXzPtKV0kHqOvN8c3uNwSfs2DesGNMkxZuLl1-Lef/s320/Tournament+Tips+%233.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Schooley Reels-</b>
Michael Thompson, from the USA Ice Fishing Team, has been using Schooley Reels
since the 1980’s. He likes the fact that these reels do not twist line. The
twists that are caused from line being spun around a fixed spool can be a
panfish deterrent. Picky panfish want a jig that will rock and kick seductively
but not spin. Schooley Reels have a plastic spool that revolves on a pin and
wraps line on straight without twisting it. They are also extremely light
weight and comfortable to jig with. The cost effectiveness of the Schooley
allows an angler to rig multiple rods and switch presentations quickly.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Mormyshka Jigs-</b>
These jigs have been a guarded secret among tournament pros for a long time. Instead
of having an eye where line is tied on, these jigs have a hole that runs
through the center. The line is then snelled around the hook at the base of the
jig. This imparts an action that is irresistible to bluegills. These jigs also
stay horizontal and eliminate the need to reposition your knot after every
fish.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUx-i6aU9aBzg0REK4F7e0_NL-gJAPbuYcg0nsGkmBjTmP4kgBDhJ6RPF_HeLu4AwvVL_3wRiz24kWZcTiawpjIN4WxdfmqlU6_MAfZtpMnM3yQKQyvzn3hvcaB4FgzvYs38sndvrc6v1k/s1600/Tournament+Tips+%234.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUx-i6aU9aBzg0REK4F7e0_NL-gJAPbuYcg0nsGkmBjTmP4kgBDhJ6RPF_HeLu4AwvVL_3wRiz24kWZcTiawpjIN4WxdfmqlU6_MAfZtpMnM3yQKQyvzn3hvcaB4FgzvYs38sndvrc6v1k/s320/Tournament+Tips+%234.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Tricked out Buckets</b>-
Michael Thompson’s fishing bucket is not something you will find in a sporting
goods store. It is rigged up with a Ram mounted Vexilar. The flasher is mounted
in an ergonomic position that allows him to see how fish are reacting to his
presentation and watch his line for bites in the same field of vision. Looking
back and forth between line and electronics could cost an angler that
tournament winning bite. A clip on the bottom of the bucket holds excess
transducer cable in place for ease of moving between holes. This is taking
efficiency to an entirely new level. He can walk up, set his bucket next to the
hole and begin fishing right away with no set-up required. According to
Thompson, you are not catching fish when your jig is not in the water so a
tournament angler must learn to limit down time. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Michigan Rigs-</b>
This season, I have become obsessed with Michigan rigs. It’s really nothing
more than a drop shot rig for ice fishing. I start out by attaching a piece of
leader material to my line with a blood knot. This leaves me with two tag ends.
I pick the straighter of the two ends and attach a fly. The other end is then
trimmed off and discarded. On the bottom of the leader I attach a split shot.
Where it’s legal to use two hooks, a small horizontal jig like the Genz<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1926716890932876381" name="_GoBack"></a> Bug can also be very effective. I’ve been using a #14 soft
hackle from Jeff’s Jigs and Flies. com with great success. The slightest shake
of the rod handle will bring these flies to life and allow them to swim
perfectly in a horizontal manner.</div>

<b>Shallow Cover</b>- I have had some of my best day’s
bluegill fishing in less than 7 feet of water. Predator fish, along with heavy
fishing pressure, will often push the biggest bluegills into heavy cover. The
key is to find small open areas near green healthy weeds. An underwater camera
allows an angler to search out these openings and judge the quality of the
weeds. I have also noticed that bluegills will often use specific “highways” to
navigate through cover. I’ve had days where we hooked fish all day in a highway
through heavy cover while anglers 10 feet away never seen a fish. Finding these
pathways is not magic. It comes down to lots of drilling and camera work. </div>

<b>Speed Fishing</b>- Tournament anglers’ fish fast. Fishing
with a partner allows one angler to drill and the other to scope things out
with the flasher. If no fish are present, the transducer is swung in the hole
like a pendulum in all directions. If any suspended lines are seen this will
give you an idea which direction to drill. The goal is to cover as much water
as possible and connect with aggressive fish. Tungsten jigs fish fast and allow
anglers to punch through slush without wasting time slush scooping holes. </div>

Consider fishing a tournament this winter. Competing with
other anglers will get you thinking like an innovator and will improve your

It’s 5 am and
you’re up brewing coffee. Lake map in hand you make last minute decisions
before heading out to load gear. Mother Nature’s icy grip has taken hold as you
head out to temperatures well below freezing. Armed with an assortment of jigs
and plastics you make your way out into the frozen tundra. Big bluegills can do
crazy things to a person. They can consume your thoughts. If this sounds like a
normal weekend to you, then you just may have what it takes to ice a bluegill
over 10” this winter. Big bluegills can be tough customers. The best eye sight
in the business coupled with an uncanny way of tasting a bait before committing
can make them very difficult at times. When it comes to winter bluegills it
seems like 10 % of anglers are hooking 90% of the fish. So what are their
secrets? I decided to pick the brains of two of the best in the business… Dave
Genz and Dave Young. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbf3lytetBMnf9ev697GfNMRazCS0bYDy5lGF7MPI5duC8btMOhAUAZRDay2wyfIV_2p7kR3hWE9h64rRI3MUAebC6YWlym48sdD54XG-RM1UWGaR5-dqRXymT3M3N9EcdlaVQmvIeCjts/s1600/12-22-12+110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbf3lytetBMnf9ev697GfNMRazCS0bYDy5lGF7MPI5duC8btMOhAUAZRDay2wyfIV_2p7kR3hWE9h64rRI3MUAebC6YWlym48sdD54XG-RM1UWGaR5-dqRXymT3M3N9EcdlaVQmvIeCjts/s320/12-22-12+110.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">
Dave Genz is
considered the founding father of modern ice fishing. The winter fishing system
that he developed has forever changed the way that anglers ice fish. Instead of
dragging a small house out onto the ice to stay comfortable, we can now stay
out of the elements and remain mobile with the advent of his Fish Trap. His
inventions were born out of necessity on his quest to catch more and bigger bluegills.</div>
<div class="NoSpacing" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Genz fishes more by feel than by
line watching. It is something that he refers to as cadence. “It’s just like
fishing with a crank bait, you want the fish to feel it in their lateral line”
says Genz. He has learned to feel his
jig pounding in the water. When he can no longer feel the jig pounding he sets
the hook knowing that a fish has inhaled his offering. He prefers clear line in
2 pound test over the high visibility stuff. Genz expressed that sometimes a
person has to cut the bluegills a little slack. He informed me that when the
bite gets tough and you find yourself missing fish to briefly drop the rod tip
and immediately set the hook. This is something that he learned by years of
bobber fishing. “Sometimes you have to let them take it” explains Genz. When he
started using Vexilar 25 years ago he used to write articles about how to catch
sniffers, those picky fish that would not bite. He wrote about finesse
presentations and dropper rigs. He has now changed his school of thought
regarding this and opts to drill more holes and search out active bitters. “I
want to make that first drop down a new hole” he explains. He firmly believes
that those first drops down a new hole produce his biggest bluegills of the
season. “At the end of the day that strategy will produce more fish” says Genz.
You want to have the mindset that a small percentage of the fish in a
particular body of water are bitters, and that it’s the anglers job to search
out those bitters. When asked about structure he expressed that his favorite
spots for bluegills are deep weed edges. He prefers to search these areas over
deep basins because he can usually find less pressured fish. “Deep basin areas
can be good early before the crowd develops” he explains. Once the crowds hit
an area, it is beneficial to strike off to find less pressured fish.</div>

<div class="NoSpacing" style="text-indent: .5in;">
You may remember Dave Young from
the television reality series Ice Men that aired on the Versus Channel. Young
is considered an authority on tight line fishing for finicky bluegills.
Spending 35 years on the hard water, Young has also seen it all. He knows how
to get it done in tough conditions. Young has spent countless hours showing
others the art of tight lining. When he is teaching someone to tight line, he
does not let his students use a flasher. He believes that this can be a
distraction for anglers new to this style of fishing. “An angler must first
learn to watch their line and detect subtle strikes” he explains. This also
forces new anglers to fish the entire water column and they will often catch
fish that come in quickly from outside the cone angle of the flasher. The
amount of concentration that Young employs is unmatched. He jokes of bringing
Advil with him on tournament day because he gets headaches from concentrating
too much on his line. If you watch Young with a jigging rod it almost looks
like he is jigging in a circle. When questioned Young stated, “A jigging style
is like a finger print and is unique to every angler.” You can still believe
that I am going to add circle jigging to my bag of tricks this winter. “I am
watching my line as far down into the water as I can see it” tells Young. This
allows him to see even the slightest irregularities in his jigging sequence.
He’s watching the small kinks in his line that appear while jigging. If he
notices the kinks in his line straighten out, he sets the hook. He is also
looking for his line to go slack. This alerts him that a fish has grabbed his
bait and swam up in the water column. His line of choice is 2 pound test Stren
in high visibility yellow. He likes the way yellow shows up against snow and
ice. He developed an ice rod for HT and pairs it with a small plastic reel
called a Schoolie. On tournament day, 28 rigged rods will make it onto the ice.
This allows Young to switch presentations quickly without taking the time to
re-tie. Throughout the interview he stressed the importance of versatility.
“Some times I work fish from the top down and other times I work them from the
bottom up” he explained. </div>

The play book is open. The best in
the business have revealed tactics to help you ice more bluegills this winter.
I hope that some of those bluegills make it back down the hole. I recently
learned of an organization called Recycled Fish. They are encouraging anglers
to release their largest bluegills to keep big fish genetics in our favorite
lakes and ensure big fish in the future.
Become more than a sportsman, become a steward of our lakes and take the
sportsman’s stewardship pledge at <a href="http://www.recycledfish.org/">http://www.recycledfish.org</a>.

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "Segoe UI"; font-size: 8.0pt;">If you're anything like me, you have probably
been at the public access checking the ice every night after work. I keep a
chisel in the back of my truck and stop on the way home. My rods are rigged and
tackle boxes organized. First ice always leaves me feeling like a kid on
Christmas morning. While I primarily spend my hard water season chasing
panfish, first ice has me dreaming of walleyes. It can be a short window of
opportunity but during the first few weeks of the hard water season the planets
align. The walleyes bulk up for the long
winter ahead. Oxygen rich waters and large baitfish call for aggressive
tactics. My favorite of which is the jigging spoon. Jigging spoons drop down
fast in deep water allowing you to put the miles on necessary to ice some
walleyes.</span></div>

<span style="background: white;">A handful of jigging spoons is all that is
needed to get started. Different spoons can be used to impart different
actions. Some are meant to be fished with bigger jigging motions, while others
respond to the slightest movements. I learned a lot about how to fish different
spoons by watching them on my underwater camera. The general rule of thumb is
to jig more with thicker spoons and less with thinner ones. I would recommend something with a rattle like
the Northland Buckshot Rattle Spoon or Lindy Rattl’n Flyer for a search lure.
These lures make a lot of commotion and call fish in for a closer look. While
you may have to switch to a less aggressive spoon to get a commitment, these
spoons will give you an idea if fish are present in the area. A second choice
would be a thin flutter spoon like the JB Weasel. These impart a much different
action than their bulky counterparts and are needed to seal the deal some
days. My third choice, and an absolute
classic, would be Bay De Noc’s Swedish Pimple. I caught my first winter
walleyes using these spoons and never leave them behind to this day. Lastly, I
wouldn't be without the Northland Macho Minnow. The small flicker tail can keep
a walleyes attention with a simple squeeze of the rod handle. While you could
add many other effective choices to your arsenal, this will give you plenty of
different actions to tempt even the most discerning of marble eyes.<span class="apple-converted-space"> <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

about spoon fishing early ice walleyes is that they allow you to fish fast.
Even in deep water you can quickly drop a spoon down, jig a few times, reel up
and move. This allows me to sort through several pieces of structure along with
previous hot spots in a single outing. I no longer spend long periods of time
camped out in last years “hot spot” waiting for the sun to set. I have been
burned by that strategy before. Spoons allow me to work through an area. If no
fish are present I keep searching. If I am seeing a lot of fish on my
electronics but not getting any to bite, I make a way point on my hand held GPS
and return once the sun slides behind the trees.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="background: white; color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "Segoe UI"; font-size: 8.0pt;">Standard jigging
for me consists of dropping my spoon to the bottom. I then reel up 1-2 ft off
bottom and hold for five seconds. I then raise my spoon about a foot with a
sharp motion and return to my original position, letting the spoon fall on a
slack line. I then pause again and repeat. When a fish is seen on my
electronics I switch to much smaller jigging motions. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="background: white;">I make a point to fish every hole that I drill
even if no fish are present on the flasher. Walleyes don't school up as tight
as panfish. Many times I will walk up and stick my transducer into a hole to
discover nothing. After dropping my spoon to the bottom a fish will appear. I
don't recommend committing large amounts of time to holes that are void of
fish. Drop the spoon to the bottom, reel up a foot, hold for five seconds, jig,
hold, and move on. Before leaving the hole I usually swing the transducer in the
hole like a pendulum in order to see what’s happening outside of the beam or
cone. If I notice a suspended line, I will give the hole a little more time. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; color: #2a2a2a; font-family: "Segoe UI"; font-size: 8.0pt;">When a fish comes into view 1 of 3 things will
usually happen. #1. The fish will rise up to the spoon and crush it. This is
everyone's favorite scenario and happens more during early ice than any other
time. Walleyes have typically had several weeks without pressure. Combine that
with nature telling them to bulk up for the long winter ahead and you have a
receipt for success. #2. Is what we like to refer to as a stand off situation.
The walleye will rise up, or come in suspended, and sit right below your spoon.
Just like a police swat team, I try to avoid a standoff at all costs. The best
avoidance technique is to keep working fish up and up and up. I refuse to let
walleyes get too good of a look at my presentation in fear they may realize it
is an imposter. One technique that can produce is to squeeze the rod handle and
lift at the same time. It imparts just enough action to get the treble hook to
swing back and forth in a very tantalizing manner that marble eyes can't
resist. Another technique that can work is to place you index finger on the rod
blank and lightly tap while lifting at the same time. We refer to this
technique as the smoker, as it mimics someone ashing a cigarette. While smoking
is terrible for your health, the only effect you will feel from this method is
violent strikes from passing fish. My standard technique is small 1- 2"
jigging motions while either lifting slowly or holding right above the fish. #3.
The third scenario is when a fish comes in for a look and drops back down to
the bottom. In this scenario, I always feel like I have nothing to lose. One
big jigging motion followed by a pause will often cause the walleye to turn
around for one last look. I have not had
great success with dropping the spoon down to the fleeing walleye. When a fish
turns around for one more look I will usually lift the spoon an additional
foot. A quick lift sets off the predatory response and forces them to make a
decision before their meal escapes. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

jigging motions. The tips here are only guidelines to get you started. Each
